2018 was 63 percent-and domestic movies raked in 14.8 billion yuan, a fall of 17.5 percent compared to last year.

At the Shanghai festival, which runs through Monday, seven top Chinese studio chiefs gathered for the first forum there to discuss the challenges ahead.

Yu Dong, chairman and CEO of the Bona Film Group, says last year was “a severe winter” for the

industry. Nearly half of the publicly-listed film companies saw their market valuations shrink.

Following A-list actress Fan Bingbing’s tax scandal, China ordered film and TV companies and indivi

duals to fully declare their earnings and “self-examine taxpaying”. A total of 11.8 billion yuan of unpa

id taxes was filed with the tax authorities by the end of 2018, according to Xinhua News Agency.

Companies and schools are already testing AI technol

ologies to help g上海品茶微信女神会所rade papers and scan for errors, make suggestions, or notice when the students veer too far off topic.

Similar projects are also in the works in the US, such as Gradescope, a

n online grading application developed at the University of California, Berkeley, that clai

ms to be able to grade exams, homework and code assignments in half the usual time.

Beijing National Day School is arguably the most futuristic middle sc

hool in China. The 67-year-old institution has no head teachers and no set classrooms.

It also offers different schedules for every one of its 4,500 students, who can choose from more than 400 different classes.

What turns this administrative nightmare into an enticing reality is

the power of AI, which is woven into the very fabric of the school, from grading papers to deli

vering packages to personalizing class schedules, Li Xigui, the principal, told Xinhua News Agency.

“We want AI technologies to be ou

Multiple channels needed to keep job market healthy

The Chinese government has accorded priority to achieving stable and expanding employment

among its six stabilization tasks. The importance of stable employment has also been highligh

ted in this year’s Government Work Report. And the State Council, China’s Cabinet, recently established the Emp

loyment Work Leading Group headed by Vice-Premier Hu Chunhua to deal with employment issues.

The government is making special efforts to stabilize and expand employment, especially be

cause of the intensifying Sino-US trade dispute and the increasing uncertainties in international trade.

Many people have the impression that Chinese goods are dominant in US markets. That is true only in a few highly com

petitive, low-profit sectors. According to US Commerce Department data, China has more than 50 percent of the

US market in such items as umbrellas, toys, prepared feathers, footwear, straw products, and bedding.

Chinese exporters have from 20 to 50 percent of the US market in ot

her low-value-added markets, plus electrical machinery and equipment, mechanical app

Roughly 20 years ago, when China’s admission to the

World Trade Organization was being negotiated, China’s economy was ti

ny as a portion of world GDP. It was clearly a poor, less-developed country that, except in a f

ew areas, was not able to compete with Western companies in high-value-added products.

As Alexander Hamilton, the first US Treasury secretary, argued, a developing country may need to p

rotect its “infant industries” from already established foreign competitors. This was the policy foll

owed by the US in the 19th century and by Western Europe, Japan, and South Korea in the years after World War II.

China is no longer a poor country. It can no longer compete by using low-wa

ge labor. Fortunately, it has now developed world-class companies that are incre

asingly developing new products and services that can compete successfully in many foreign markets.

We think the authorities should step up their efforts to

improve the governance of ethics in scientific research in light of the loopholes exposed in He’s case,” Zhai told China Daily.

Results of further investigations in the case should be made public, including the penalties given to all involved, she said.

One reason for publishing the article on Nature was to show the resolve of the gover

nment and ethics scholars in China to improve ethical compliance in the sciences, Zhai said.

In the commentary, the four scholars said the government should release clearer rules and regulations on the use of techn

ologies and hand down sharper punishments to offenders, including disqualifying them from scientific research.

“Self-regulation of scientists is unlikely to be enough, given their potential conflicts of i

nterest under market pressures. Thus, top-down regulation is crucial,” they said.

Earnings growth may sustain at a rather high speed

Wang Yang, an analyst with Soochow Securities based in Suzhou, Jia

ngsu province, said that apart from the economic recovery underpinned by su

pportive policies, cyclical factors also imply that earnings growth will continue to recover in the rest of the year.

According to Wang, the current profit cycle of A-share companies started from 2

016 and should end with recovery this year, as the cycles usually last for 12 to 14 quarters.

This year’s gradual recovery in earnings growth could help the A-share market to withstan

d external uncertainties, said Yan Xiang, an analyst with Shenzhen-based Guosen Securities.

“It is quite different from 2018 when earnings growth of most companies deteriorated. Earn

ings growth, a determinant of the market trend, is likely to be on the recovery path,” Yan said in a note.

The rise in both pet ownership and travel is increasin

The rise in both pet ownership and travel is inIn 2018, the pet market was w

orth 172.2 billion yuan, more than triple that of 2013,” said Neil Wang, president of con

sultancy Frost & Sullivan. “Of which, the dog market was 98.5 billion yuan and for cats it was 60.2 billion yuan.”

According to Frost & Sullivan’s research, services counted for about 15 percent of the pet dog and cat market, totaling 24.1 billion yuan.

As pet hotel services are in hot demand, the industry has been upgrading to assure pet owners

of the safety of their four-legged friends. And some business owners such as Li have taken things a step

further, making sure that it’s not only the owners who are happy, but the pets, as well.

Li said many pet owners worry that there is no comfortable place for their best friends to stay.

“Traditional pet centers can harm pets by keeping them in spaces that are too small, especially big breeds, which can’t even tu

rn around,” she said. “Pets can also see guests going in and out of the facility, and that can frighten them, as well.creasin

Appetite for fantasy, sci-firom Web Novel under the China

Ahead of this year’s London Book Fair in March, media reported a rise in interest in translat

ed works among British readers, with a special mention of the wider acceptance of transl

ated Chinese titles last year. For translator Anna Holmwood, this signals the arrival of a new era.

“This is a big moment for Chinese fiction abroad,” says Holmwood, who has translated Chinese literature for almost a decade.

Her translation work, Legends of the Condor Heroes: A Hero Born, a fa

ntasy novel written by Jin Yong (Louis Cha Leung-yung), and Liu Cixin’s science-fictio

n book, The Three Body Problem, are shown in a Nielsen report as examples of t

wo of the most popular Chinese fiction works in Britain in 2018. The Guardian adds the two novels “sold strongly”.

“Languages in growing demand include Chinese and Arabic, along

side Icelandic and Polish,” according to the Nielsen report that cites trends from 2014 to 2018.

Zhao Wanping, a lawmaker from Anhui province, said

revisions to the law should highlight the protection of juveniles and regulate online informatio

n collection or use to prevent harm and problems brought by the internet, such as school bullying and sexual abuse.

In response, Liu Xinhua, a senior official from the National People’s Congr

ess, the top legislative body, said amendments to the law this year are being considered.

“Articles will be doubled, and the hot issues, including school bullying, will be added,” Liu said.

Tong Lihua, director of a juvenile law research center in Beijing, welcomed the rev

ision, suggesting that the law be amended to be more specific and practical.

Yuan Ningning, an associate law professor at China University of Political Science and

Law, is keeping his eye on school bullying, saying the revision would deter would-be offenders.
